Movement as Meditation

In this episode of the Movement Without Obsession series, Nicole Ternay explores how movement can become more than just exercise…it can become a form of meditation. If you've been stuck in the cycle of counting calories, chasing step goals, or feeling like every workout has to "count," this conversation is for you.

Learn why consistency beats intensity, how walking and mindful movement can calm your nervous system, and why the best workout isn't the hardest one…it's the one you'll actually do. This episode will help you shift from using movement as punishment to embracing it as a way to reconnect with yourself, creating a healthier relationship with your body and making sustainable weight loss feel lighter, simpler, and more peaceful.

Movement as Meditation

Movement Without Obsession Series

If you've been following along with my Movement Without Obsession series, thank you. And if you're just finding this series now, I encourage you to go back and listen to the previous episodes because they all build on one another. Together, they challenge the way we've been taught to think about exercise, weight loss, and our relationship with movement.

After more than 24 years in the weight loss and fitness industry, I've learned something that completely changed how I coach women. Weight loss isn't just about food and exercise. Those things matter, but they're only part of the equation. Lasting transformation happens when you change the relationship you have with yourself.

That's exactly why I created MavenHeart. Yes, I still teach women how to lose weight, but I also help them change the identity that keeps them stuck in the first place.

Today, I want to talk about something that has become one of the most healing practices in my own life: movement as meditation.

When Did Movement Become Something We Had to Earn?

Let me ask you a question.

When was the last time you moved your body without trying to earn something?

Without trying to burn calories.

Without trying to make up for what you ate yesterday.

Without trying to close the rings on your smartwatch or hit a certain number of steps.

Somewhere along the way, movement stopped being something we simply did because we were alive. It became another task to complete, another number to chase, another reason to judge ourselves.

I recently shared an apple fritter with someone while visiting Smithville in New Jersey. It was delicious. The next day, I didn't wake up trying to punish myself for eating it. I didn't force myself into a grueling workout or obsess over how many calories I needed to burn.

That's freedom.

And that's what I want for you.

Many women tell me they feel anxious if they don't wear their fitness watch or log every bite of food. My question is always the same.

What would happen if you took the watch off?

Would your walk still count?

Of course it would.

The movement happened whether a device recorded it or not.

Movement Is for Your Mind as Much as Your Body

I've been a professional ballet dancer, a personal trainer, and a group fitness instructor. I've taught everything from boot camps and kickboxing to Pilates, yoga, and Zumba. I've coached thousands of women over the years.

I've watched the fitness industry become louder.

Harder.

More competitive.

Everything became about numbers, metrics, intensity, and pushing harder.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I love a challenge. I've completed more than a dozen obstacle course races, and I had a blast doing them.

Competition isn't the problem.

The problem is when we're competing because we're trying to prove we're enough.

When movement becomes a way to earn worthiness instead of celebrating what your body can do, it stops feeling freeing and starts feeling exhausting.

That's one of the biggest reasons so many women eventually stop exercising altogether.

Movement stopped feeling like freedom.

It started feeling like failure.

Fitness Trends Will Always Change, But the Basics Never Do

The fitness industry thrives on novelty.

Every year there's another workout trend promising better, faster results. Before long, another one replaces it.

The same thing happens with dieting.

Different names.

Different marketing.

The same basic principles underneath.

I've reached a point in my career where I'm simply tired of the noise. Women don't need another gimmick. They need simplicity. They need sustainability.

The truth is, losing weight doesn't have to be nearly as complicated as we've been taught.

Your Body Responds Better to Consistency Than Intensity

One lesson that never changes is this:

Your body loves consistency.

It doesn't require you to destroy yourself every workout.

In fact, as a personal trainer, one of my goals was making sure clients weren't incredibly sore after their first session.

That might surprise you.

But when you're so sore you can barely sit down for three days, your brain starts associating exercise with pain.

Then what happens?

You don't want to come back.

Especially for women over 40, recovery matters.

When muscles become sore, tiny microscopic tears are being repaired. That's how muscles become stronger. But during that recovery period, inflammation increases, your immune system is working harder, and your body needs time to heal.

If every workout leaves you exhausted and miserable, you're creating resistance instead of consistency.

The best workout isn't the hardest workout.

It's the one you'll actually repeat.

Movement Changes Your Brain Before It Changes Your Body

This is something we don't talk about nearly enough.

Long before your clothes fit differently, your brain is already changing.

Your nervous system begins regulating.

Stress hormones begin settling.

Your thoughts become clearer.

Your confidence starts growing.

Every time you show up for yourself, even if it's just three planned workouts a week, your brain collects evidence.

"I keep my promises."

"I show up."

"I can trust myself."

That's where lasting habits begin.

Not through guilt.

Not through shame.

Through identity.

Why Walking Became My Favorite Form of Meditation

When people hear the word meditation, they often imagine sitting perfectly still in complete silence.

That's one form.

But it isn't the only one.

Some of the clearest moments of my life have happened while walking.

No podcast.

No music.

No earbuds.

Just listening.

Listening to birds.

Listening to the wind through the trees.

Watching the water move.

Feeling gratitude.

Sometimes I prayed.

Sometimes I cried.

Sometimes I worked through difficult seasons of my life one step at a time.

Walking became therapy before I even realized it.

It gave me clarity that sitting at my desk never could.

There's real science behind this. Rhythmic movement helps organize your thoughts differently. It's why so many people get their best ideas while walking or even while taking a shower.

Movement doesn't always need to be loud.

Sometimes it simply needs to create enough quiet for you to hear yourself again.

Weight Loss Isn't Just About Calories

Yes, calories matter.

Movement matters.

Nutrition matters.

But your nervous system matters too.

If your body constantly feels stressed, overwhelmed, and stuck in survival mode, it can make sustainable weight loss much harder.

That's one reason I recommend walking so often.

Not because it's flashy.

Not because it burns the most calories.

Because you'll actually do it.

It lowers stress.

It becomes part of your daily life.

It supports your mind while supporting your body.

That's the kind of movement that lasts.

Every Kind of Movement Counts

One of the biggest mistakes we've made is ranking movement.

We've somehow decided that lifting weights counts more than gardening.

Running counts more than dancing.

A gym workout counts more than playing with your grandkids.

Who decided that?

Certainly not your body.

Your muscles don't know whether you're carrying groceries, pulling weeds, lifting dumbbells, or riding your bike.

They simply know they're working.

Your heart doesn't care whether you're on a treadmill or laughing while chasing your dog through the backyard.

Movement is movement.

Every bit of it matters.

Stop Asking How Many Calories You Burned

Instead, ask yourself a different question.

How do I want to feel when I'm done?

Do I want to feel peaceful?

Clear?

Energized?

Stronger?

Connected to myself?

When movement becomes about how you want to feel instead of how many calories you burned, something incredible happens.

You stop negotiating.

You stop waiting for motivation.

You stop quitting.

Movement becomes less about changing your body and more about coming home to it.

That's what I mean when I say movement is meditation.

You're not escaping your body.

You're returning to it.

This Week, Leave the Performance Behind

The next time you move your body, leave the performance behind.

You don't have to beat anyone.

You don't even have to beat yesterday's version of yourself.

Go for a walk.

Stretch.

Lift weights.

Dance in your kitchen.

Ride your bike.

Play with your grandkids.

Garden.

Whatever allows you to reconnect with yourself.

Notice your breathing.

Notice your posture.

Notice your thoughts.

Notice the incredible body you've spent years criticizing is still carrying you through your life every single day.

Movement isn't punishment.

It isn't payment for food.

It isn't something you have to earn.

It's one of the greatest privileges of being alive.

When movement becomes meditation, weight loss becomes something that naturally happens alongside your life instead of becoming your entire life.
