Why Do You Self-Sabotage and How to Stop Doing It

Why Do You Self-Sabotage?

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "I was doing so well... and then I ruined it." Or maybe you've labeled yourself as someone who always self-sabotages.

I want to challenge that belief.

What if you aren't sabotaging yourself at all?

What if your brain is simply trying to protect you?

That's a very different conversation.

Every time I hear a woman tell me, "I start strong, but then I lose motivation," I don't hear failure. I hear protection. I hear a nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do...keeping you inside what feels familiar.

The problem is that familiarity isn't always where your future lives.

If you keep believing you're your own worst enemy, every setback becomes evidence that something is wrong with you.

But if you realize your brain is protecting an identity it's known for years, you can finally stop fighting yourself and start changing the pattern.

Because you can't heal what you keep attacking.

Your Brain Chooses Familiar Over Better

One of the biggest reasons women stay stuck isn't because they don't know what to do.

It's because their nervous system isn't asking:

"Is this better for me?"

It's asking:

"Is this familiar?"

And familiar almost always wins.

Have you ever prayed for change, started making progress, and then suddenly found yourself exhausted? You stopped working out. You scrolled your phone more. You promised yourself you'd start again tomorrow.

It rarely happens all at once.

It's usually a series of tiny decisions that quietly escort you back to the life you've always known.

Not because that life is better.

Because it's familiar.

Your primitive brain is wired for survival, not transformation. That's why personal growth often feels uncomfortable even when it's exactly what you've been asking for.

Sometimes Success Feels Scarier Than Failure

Most people think they're afraid of failing.

I don't think that's true for many women.

I think they're afraid of succeeding.

Because success asks you to let go of the version of yourself you've been carrying around for years.

The woman who constantly starts over.

The woman who struggles with food.

The woman who says yes to everyone.

The woman who doesn't charge what she's worth.

The woman who hides, apologizes, people pleases, or waits for permission.

She can't come with you.

Not because she's bad.

Because she's no longer who you're becoming.

That old identity has to be released before a new one can take its place.

And yes…

There is grief in that.

We spend so much time celebrating becoming the next version of ourselves that we rarely acknowledge the sadness that comes with letting the old one go.

Growth isn't just exciting.

Sometimes it's heartbreaking.

Who Are You Without the Struggle?

Here's a question that changed everything for me.

Who are you if you're no longer trying to fix yourself?

Who are you if weight loss isn't your identity anymore?

Who are you if you're no longer the woman who's always struggling?

For many women, the struggle becomes home.

It becomes their explanation for why they aren't moving forward.

It becomes their personality.

Without the struggle...

There's just you.

And that's incredibly vulnerable.

I've experienced this in my own life over the last several years.

Leaving my marriage. Rebuilding my identity. Figuring out who Nicole is independent of every role I had played before.

There was a grieving process.

Not because I wanted to stay the old version of myself.

But because I had to say goodbye to her.

That kind of identity work changes everything.

Discipline Isn't Forcing Yourself

I think we've misunderstood discipline.

Most people believe discipline means pushing harder.

I believe discipline means staying with yourself when your old identity starts negotiating.

Those familiar thoughts show up quietly.

"I deserve a treat."

"I'll start Monday."

"This week has been crazy."

"I've already messed up."

Those thoughts aren't random.

They're evidence of old programming.

Old identities don't scream.

They whisper.

And because those whispers sound reasonable, we believe them.

That's why coaching can be so powerful.

Someone outside of your own mind can hear the patterns you've stopped noticing.

The Suspension Bridge Between Who You Were and Who You're Becoming

Imagine you're standing in the middle of a suspension bridge.

Behind you is the life you've always known.

Predictable.

Comfortable.

Familiar.

Ahead of you is the woman you've dreamed of becoming.

Healthier.

More confident.

Peaceful.

Free.

But there's fog.

You can't clearly see what's waiting on the other side.

Your brain hates uncertainty.

So instead of moving forward, it convinces you to turn around.

Not because the old life is better.

Because it's known.

This is exactly what happens during an identity shift.

Motivation might get you halfway across that bridge.

Identity is what carries you the rest of the way.

Eventually, the unfamiliar becomes familiar.

That's when your new identity begins to feel like home.

Achievement Changes Circumstances. Becoming Changes Everything.

This is why I spend so much time talking about becoming instead of achieving.

Achievement changes your circumstances.

Becoming changes the woman creating those circumstances.

That's a completely different level of transformation.

When you become someone new internally, your external decisions naturally begin to change.

Not because you're forcing yourself.

Because they fit who you are becoming.

Stop Asking Why You Self-Sabotage

The next time you catch yourself saying:

"Why did I do that again?"

Pause.

Instead ask:

What was that protecting me from?

Maybe disappointment.

Maybe rejection.

Maybe visibility.

Maybe responsibility.

Maybe outgrowing people.

Maybe proving to yourself that you're actually capable.

That last one is bigger than most people realize.

Because once you know what you're capable of...

You can't unknow it.

And with that comes responsibility.

Not blame.

Ownership.

That's where real freedom begins.

Your Identity Creates Your Habits

Your behaviors always follow your identity.

If you believe you're inconsistent...

You'll consistently create inconsistent behaviors.

If you believe you'll always struggle with food...

You'll keep finding evidence that proves you're right.

Your brain loves proving your identity correct.

That's why the labels you give yourself matter so much.

"I'm a hot mess."

"I always quit."

"I have no willpower."

"I sabotage everything."

Those aren't harmless phrases.

They're instructions.

Your brain listens.

Then it gets to work proving them true.

It's time to retire those labels.

Instead, try saying:

"I've been protecting an old identity."

Feel the difference.

That statement creates compassion instead of shame.

Awareness instead of criticism.

And awareness is where lasting change begins.

You're One Identity Away

People often say you're one decision away from changing your life.

I don't believe that.

I believe you're one identity away.

The decisions come naturally after that.

When your identity changes, your choices begin to align with the woman you're becoming...even before you have evidence that she's fully arrived.

You don't have to pretend to be someone you're not.

You simply practice becoming her.

How does she think?

How does she respond when old habits appear?

How does she recover after making a mistake?

How does she keep walking when the bridge feels foggy?

Those are the questions that change your life.

A Question to Sit With

If your future self were sitting across from you today...

What would she say you're still protecting that you no longer need?

Don't rush to answer it.

Journal about it.

Sit with it.

Because the answer may not simply change your habits.

It may completely change who you believe you are.

And that's where everything begins.

You’re standing in the space between who you’ve been… and who you’re becoming.

And that space isn’t something to rush through...it’s something to understand.
