What happens when life shatters the identity you thought you had?
Listener Discretion is Advised
Before we start, I want to let you know that today's conversation includes experiences of sexual assault, suicide and other potential trauma triggers. Our hope is that this discussion offers hope and perspective, but please honor where you are today and decide if this is the right time to listen.
In this powerful conversation on MavenHeart, Nicole Ternay sits down with transformational coach and author Sally Anderson to explore resilience, healing, fear, and what it truly means to transform adversity into purpose.
Sally shares her extraordinary journey through unimaginable trauma, loss, public criticism, and reinvention—and the lessons she has learned about finding your voice, changing your relationship with fear, and reconnecting with yourself at the deepest level.
Together, Nicole and Sally discuss:
• Why your story matters and how to stop comparing your pain to others
• The difference between empowered fear and the fear that keeps you stuck
• How your language shapes your reality
• Healing your relationship with your body and yourself
• Why true transformation requires a new identity
This episode is a reminder that the voice inside you has always been there. The question is: are you ready to listen?

Beyond the Episode
If you've already listened to my conversation with Sally Anderson on the MavenHeart Podcast, then you know today's live isn't about retelling her story. It's about going deeper.
One of the things that struck me most after our conversation was this...
We all have moments that shape us.
But what determines the rest of our lives isn't only what happened to us—it's the meaning we give those experiences and who we choose to become because of them.
Sally shared an extraordinary story of survival, healing, leadership, and learning to find her voice in the face of unimaginable adversity. But there were so many moments after we stopped recording where I thought, I wish we had more time.
That's what Beyond the Episode is for.
Today is simply a conversation.
A chance to explore what healing actually looks like... how we rebuild trust with ourselves... how we move through fear... and what it means to lead from a place of deep alignment instead of survival.
Join us for Beyond the Episode with Sally Anderson on August 12th at 4PM EST go to https://www.facebook.com/nicole.ternay to RSVP. Where we will go deeper into meeting Sally and you can ask her questions.

When You’re Ready to Listen to the Voice Inside You
There are moments in life when the voice inside us becomes impossible to ignore.
The voice that whispers there is more. The voice that asks us to stop running, stop performing, and finally face what we have been avoiding. The voice that reminds us we were never meant to simply survive…we were meant to come home to ourselves.
In this episode of the MavenHeart Podcast, I sat down with Sally Anderson, a transformational coach, author, and leader from New Zealand whose life story is one of unimaginable adversity, resilience, and ultimately, transformation.
But this conversation isn’t just about what happened to Sally.
It’s about what she discovered on the other side of everything she experienced.
Because every one of us has something we carry. Maybe it’s trauma. Maybe it’s grief. Maybe it’s the version of ourselves we had to become in order to survive.
And the question becomes:
Are you ready to listen to the voice inside you that is calling you into something more?
The Stories We Carry and the Moments That Shape Us
Sally shared that one of the most important lessons she has learned is that our stories are only meaningful when they create connection.
It can be easy to hear someone else’s story and compare. We may think, “What happened to me wasn’t that bad,” or “Someone else has been through worse.”
But pain does not work that way.
Your experience is your experience.
Your wounds do not have to be the biggest wounds in the room to deserve attention, healing, and compassion.
One of the most powerful things Sally shared was that she believes everyone is carrying something they have not fully acknowledged. Something that has impacted the way they see themselves, the choices they make, or the way they move through the world.
The first step toward transformation is often the willingness to stop minimizing what you have experienced.
Because what we avoid doesn’t disappear.
It stays underneath the surface, influencing our relationships, our confidence, our decisions, and the way we show up in our own lives.
Finding Your Voice After Life Changes Everything
Sally’s journey has included profound trauma, loss, grief, public attacks, and moments where fear could have completely taken over.
Yet one of the biggest messages she shares is this:
The liberation comes from finding your voice.
Not because speaking up is easy.
Not because fear disappears.
But because staying silent keeps us disconnected from ourselves.
Many women know what it feels like to silence their own needs, desires, dreams, and truth. We learn to keep the peace. We learn to be agreeable. We learn to carry everything quietly.
But there is a cost to abandoning your own voice.
When you disconnect from yourself, you disconnect from your power.
Finding your voice is not about becoming someone louder.
It is about becoming someone more aligned.
The Relationship Between Fear and Transformation
One of the conversations that stood out most in this episode was around fear.
Most of us are taught to think of fear as something we need to eliminate or overcome.
But Sally offers a different perspective.
She explains that there is a difference between empowered fear and disempowered fear.
Empowered fear protects us. It helps us make decisions that keep us safe.
But disempowered fear keeps us trapped.
It keeps us from taking the leap.
It keeps us from having the conversation.
It keeps us from becoming the person we know we are capable of becoming.
The truth is, growth often lives on the other side of discomfort.
The next chapter of your life usually requires you to do something your current identity is not comfortable doing.
And that is where transformation begins.
Your Language Creates Your Reality
One of Sally’s areas of expertise is helping people understand the power of language.
The words we repeatedly say become the lens through which we experience our lives.
Think about the phrases you use every day:
“I’m just not that kind of person.”
“I always do this.”
“I’ll never change.”
“I’m too old.”
“I’m too far behind.”
Those statements may feel like facts, but often they are stories we have repeated so many times that we no longer question them.
Changing your life requires changing the conversations you have with yourself.
Because the way you speak about yourself becomes the way you experience yourself.
Healing Your Relationship With Your Body
As someone who works with women around weight loss and mindset, this part of the conversation deeply resonated with me.
Sally shared her own journey of reconnecting with her body after years of struggling with body image, pain, and disconnection.
One of the biggest shifts came when she stopped viewing her body as something to fight against and started seeing it as something to honor.
This is something I see with so many women.
We spend years criticizing the body that has carried us through every season of life.
We judge it.
We punish it.
We try to change it before we ever learn to appreciate it.
But true transformation does not begin with hatred.
It begins with connection.
When you learn to care for yourself from a place of love instead of punishment, everything changes.
Wanting More Requires a New Identity
Sally shared a powerful distinction between wanting something and being committed to something.
Many of us want the results.
We want better health.
We want deeper relationships.
We want more confidence.
We want to step into our next chapter.
But wanting something and becoming the person who creates that reality are two different things.
Transformation requires identity change.
It requires letting go of the version of yourself that keeps choosing comfort over growth.
It requires becoming someone who is willing to meet resistance instead of running from it.
Because resistance is not a sign that you are on the wrong path.
Often, resistance is evidence that you are approaching the edge of who you have been.
The Power of Silence and Coming Home to Yourself
At the end of our conversation, Sally shared something simple but profound:
Meditation has been one of the greatest tools in her life.
In a world filled with constant noise, distractions, opinions, and expectations, silence has become something many of us rarely experience.
But silence is where we reconnect.
It is where we hear ourselves again.
It is where we stop looking outside ourselves for answers and begin trusting the wisdom that already exists within.
Because the truth is, the voice inside you has been there all along.
The question is:
Are you ready to listen?
Final Thoughts
Sally’s story is a reminder that our past does not have to define our future.
The moments that break us can also become the moments that awaken us.
Not because what happened was meant to happen.
Not because pain is something we should seek.
But because we have the ability to transform what we experience into wisdom, compassion, and purpose.
Your next chapter begins when you stop abandoning yourself and start listening to the woman inside you who has been waiting to be heard.
